Puppy story, Gardening

A funny thing happened with my parents' new puppy, yesterday.   After church mom was telling me how Sammi (the dog) does not like to go outside through the normal door.   See my parents' have an enclosed patio with a sliding door into the house and a normal storm/screen door that leads from the porch to outside.  It is in this door that the dog door is placed.  Well when mom opened the door to the outside, Sammi refused to go through it.   It was only when my mom closed the door that Sammi felt ok coming out - through the doggy door.

The porch is her nest/dog house, so she will bring toys and "prizes" inside.   After church, mom and I met dad (who goes to a different denomination church) for dinner.   At dinner he told us he was sitting in his chair and happened to look outside - -- to see a broom going by.   Turns out Sammi had found the broom and was bringing it back to her "home".   She was attempting to get it through the dog door without success.   So my dad left to meet us.

Flash forward to when I got home.   I call my parents because my mom likes to know that I got home safely.   When I did, she told me that when they got home, they discovered the broom INSIDE the porch.  So Sammi managed to figure out how to get it inside after all.   She was sacked out on the front step.

She also likes to growl and bark at her toys.   I've never seen a dog do this before - at least not without a human present.

In other news....

I don't know what's up with my garden.  Stuff came up .. but is doing nothing.  Well the squash seems to be progressing but not the lettuce.   And I haven't seen spinach at all.   We have been having abnormal hot days though.  I know I should have planted earlier but a) I was getting ready for vacation and b) I wanted the box completed first.

But even my tomatoes aren't growing.  They aren't dieing either but they aren't progressing.  We just have not had much RAIN.  Oh we had some when I was on vacation but geeze June is the time for thunderstorms.   They have been missing us.  OH I know that there is a strong chance of hail with these storms but most of the time we get drenching rain.   Well now that my faucet is fixed I'm going to try to water the areas more.

About a week or so ago I noticed a couple of wasps (I think they are yellow jackets)  going inside the fold of my outside table umbrella.   (BTW I wasn't sure what to call this - so if it should be something else let me know.)  Well I opened it up today, sure enough there were a couple of small spots where they started to build a home.  Not very big - one was about 1.5" square and the other about 2".  I blasted them off with water - there appears to be only two or three actual wasps so they didn't really connect it with me.  However, I noticed two going back up under the umbrella again after I closed it.   I was hoping they would just move some where else.   I DO have a wasp trap I need to set up - but I generally do so across the yard.   I may have to put it near the table and hope I catch them.  Or maybe they will move before then.

And lastly?   My special deep waterer broke today! I've only had it a few weeks!  the part that connects to the hose just snapped off.   They didn't have any replacements at home depot so they gave me my money back.   I went to Lowes and they had a deep waterer... and I got in line to pay for it... but realized there was no control switch on the device itself.   See the one I had before which was only a few dollars more - was also a feeder.  And you could control the water flow at the device itself.  I really like that.

Granted if the one at Lowes was say 10 bucks - I'd go for it.   But being only 4 dollars cheaper (21 vs 25) then the special one I had - I said forget it.
I'll find a home depot that's really stocked with the "Ross" feeder/waterers and get that again - and hope it isn't a design flaw.... paying 25 bucks for something should last for years - using it daily during the summer (I was using it to water my newly planted xeroscape plants.... I had others and they died because I forgot to water them two days - apparently these must be watered every day the first year to be established.  )

What I don't get - is there doesn't seem to be a-lot of these in the stores now.  When I first went to Home depot they told me that they had discontinued the deep waterer they had last year.   And the Lowes rep was surprised to see what they DID have because they thought they didn't carry them anymore!

I mean REALLY?  This is a needed tool.  If you don't deep water sometimes then your bushes end up really shallow.    I had about 4 dead/dying lilac bushes that I had someone dig up and he told me they were fairly easy (except the last one) because the root system wasn't very deep!  Same with the two non-blooming rose bushes I had him take out.

So I vowed to deep water my bushes about once a month this summer.    The deep waterer is also REALLY good at loosening  the soil in order to plant stuff, and get out weeds.

Well tomorrow's another day.    I did find out Friday that we cannot use the tools we normally would use for system analyst anymore.   This sucks.  So tomorrow I have to get a presentation together for a brainstorming alternatives session in the afternoon.
